In today’s digital world, a well-maintained website is crucial for your online presence and business success. Regular updates and maintenance are key to ensuring your website runs smoothly and continues to engage visitors effectively. In this article, I will outline the essential aspects of keeping your website running smoothly.

Clients I build websites for are always offered a website management plan and for all websites that are on my hosting, it is a requirement. I manage my own servers which are optimised for WordPress and I ensure only secure websites are hosted there. This is one major distinction between the hosting I offer and that of cheaper shared hosting services.

1. Software and Security Updates

Regularly update your website’s content management system (CMS), plugins, and themes. These updates often include bug fixes, security enhancements, and new features. Outdated software can leave your site vulnerable to security breaches.

For sites on my management plans, these updates are carried out once a week.

2. Backups

Backups are crucial for all websites, especially eCommerce sites. All websites need regular back ups of your website’s data and files. This precautionary measure ensures that you can quickly recover your site in case of a crash, data loss, or hacking incident.

For sites on my management plans, backups are carried out weekly, with eCommerce sites having backups done each day.

3. Performance Optimisation

Optimise your website’s performance by compressing images, leveraging browser caching, and minimising CSS and JavaScript files. Faster-loading pages enhance user experience and SEO rankings.

Performance optimisation is carried out once a month to ensure your site remains snappy and easy to use for visitors.

4. Content Review

Periodically review and update your website’s content. Ensure that information is accurate, relevant, and up-to-date. Broken links and outdated content can harm your site’s credibility.

Broken links are checked once a month on all sites I manage. A certain amount of time for content edits is also included.

5. Security Measures

Implementing strong security measures is crucial for all website. This includes SSL certificates, firewalls, and security plugins. Regular scans for malware and vulnerabilities are needed to safeguard your site and visitor data.

These are carried out once a month for all sites managed by me.

6. Regular Testing

Perform regular testing on different browsers and devices to identify and fix any compatibility issues. This ensures that your website functions correctly for all users.

For websites I manage, this is carried out once a month.

7. Monitor Performance

Use website analytics tools to monitor performance metrics such as page load times, bounce rates, and conversion rates. Adjust your strategy based on these insights.

For websites I manage, a performance overview is included each month in a performance report along with an overview of Google Search Console report which shows what terms people are using to find your website.

8. Pro Tools

All websites I build, include licences for pro tools that I have invested in over time.

Pro plugins for WordPress offer several advantages for website owners:

  1. Enhanced Functionality: Pro plugins often provide advanced features and functionality that go beyond what free plugins offer. They can add customisations, integrations, and tools that are essential for specific website needs.
  2. Regular Updates and Support: Pro plugin developers typically offer regular updates to ensure compatibility with the latest WordPress versions and security patches. Additionally, you can often access dedicated customer support for troubleshooting and assistance.
  3. Reliability and Security: Premium plugins are usually well-coded and thoroughly tested for security vulnerabilities. They adhere to best practices, reducing the risk of conflicts or security breaches on your website.
  4. Advanced Customisation: Pro plugins often come with extensive customisation options, allowing you to tailor them to your unique requirements. This level of control can significantly benefit your site’s performance and appearance.
  5. Premium Features: You can access premium features that can boost your website’s performance, SEO, and user experience. These features can include advanced analytics, SEO optimisation tools, and e-commerce capabilities.
  6. Adherence to Licensing: Pro plugins generally adhere to licensing and copyright laws, ensuring you’re using software legally and ethically on your website.

For sites I manage, licences to pro tools used are included.

Conclusion

Maintaining a website is an ongoing process. By regularly updating software, securing your site, optimising performance, and enhancing the user experience, you can ensure that your website not only works flawlessly but also helps your business grow online.

Remember, a well-maintained website reflects positively on your brand, engages visitors, and contributes to your online success. Make website maintenance a priority, and your digital presence will continue to thrive.
